After studying at the Maritime Academy, Jan van Esch worked for various companies in the shipping industry. During this time, he gained practical experience in maintaining and repairing diesel engines, gearboxes and ship propulsion systems. One of his specialisms was investigating problems and, in conjunction with the involved parties, searching for appropriate solutions.
Since 1998 he has worked as a marine loss adjuster, which requires him to inspect and investigate claims relating to ships and mechanical installations. His scope of work includes pleasure craft, inland navigation, dredging and maritime shipping. As well as insurance matters, Jan also carries out work when there are disputes between vessel owners, shipyards and suppliers, when he acts as party expert or court expert.
In 2009, he trained as a Court Expert at the University of Leiden, after which his name could be entered in the National Register of Court Experts (LRGD).
